about

Jordan - Montreal was the first place where we felt like true foreigners. A lack of English road signs made even the prospect of getting there seem like a pipe dream. As opposed to the somewhat familiar structures of Ottawa, Montreal's architecture is decidedly European. Whether it was an authentic sentiment or our own paranoid projections, the largely French-speaking residents of Montreal seemed to be less than pleased at our presence. Every interaction seemed to have a subtext. In a nutshell, the subtext was, "what are you doing here?" We didn't have a show in Montreal so we didn't really have an answer. The further we got into the city, the more we realized that we weren't in Kansas anymore. The more we realized that we weren't in Kansas, the more we kind of wished that we were.

Heath - Mcdonald's was the only thing we recognized. None of us eat at Mcdonald's, but it was a welcome sight in a strange land. I ordered a hamburger with a cup of water. I received a Big Mac with large fries and a coke. We saw amazing architecture and happy people everywhere. All I remember was getting ripped off at Mconald's. I don't think they wanted me there. That's where the chorus comes from. It's just my terrible french pronunciation of "How did you get here? When do you leave?" I know when I'm not welcome. And I felt Montreal conspiring against me that day.

Isaac - As songwriters, communication plays a huge role in our lives. Visiting a city that didn't speak english wouldn't have been an issue if we were headed to Italy, China, or actual France but we were in Canada, so seeing road signs bump english to a subtitle then eventually phased out for french was change we hadn't prepared for. We all felt well cultured so this wasn't much a red flag but with no map (or apps) we found ourselves making guesses as to where to go, eventually finding the city. I remember thinking we finally found a parking garage that turned out to be a rental car area for a train station. Or was in an airport? After a couple hours of sleep in what I can only assume was supposed to be a motel, we got up to see Montreal. The city is beautiful. It boasts great water, interesting shops, & impressive architecture but we couldn't shake the feeling that no one wanted us there. We ate at a McDonalds to make things easier on our minds and our badly wounded wallets, only to have all 3 of our orders messed up. Lost in translation I guess. In fairness, Canadian fast food is way better than American. Adieu Montréal.
